Church Street is one of the oldest streets in Llangollen and until the 19th Century was the main road from London to Holyhead. In 1815 Thomas Telford began his construction of the new A5 taking all the traffic away from Church Street. The street’s name comes from the Church of Saint Collen and the original church was founded by the Saint in the late 16th Century. Collen was an Irish warrior and religious figure who lived for a time as a hermit on Glastonbury Tor. The church has been altered and rebuilt over the years, the amazing carved oak ceiling dates from the 15th Century.
